  • You should definitely bring a change of clothes if you are planning to visit the falls. They are a beautiful sight and may be a day trip for you, but it is guaranteed that you will get drenched even if you have no plans of wading into the bathing pools. The moisture and force of the spray of water can leave your clothes damp which may be uncomfortable.
  • When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Go for a boat ride and enjoy the change of pace and mode of transport.
  • If you are planning to head to Chauragarh, make sure that you are carrying enough food and water for you and your companions. This is a prominent landmark of Satpura and is located 4 kms from Mahadeo. You will find the summit crowned with many emblems of Mahadeo worship. This place may not have ample reliable food and water sources and it is better to be safe rather than sorry.
  • Keep in mind that Pachmarhi is famous for its Honey and Ayurvedic Medicines. If you know anyone who will appreciate those products are gifts or you would like to stock up for yourself, this is the best place to buy.
  • There are many eating joints that come recommended. If you are planning a short trip, there will be no need to pack any food. Instead, sample the typical Guajarati, Maharashtrian or Jain cuisines many restaurants have on their menu. The food will be affordable yet tasty. If you are unsure of any restaurants, do check up online to read up reviews. It may turn out that your palate isn’t used to the fare served. Remember, what’s good for the locals may not necessarily agree with you.
  • Beverages are available everywhere and it is recommended to drink only bottled water. Do not attempt to drink from flowing streams no matter how clear you think the water may be.

  • If you want to have an alcoholic drink, there are many bars scattered all over the place from where you can purchase alcohol. It is also recommended that you don’t go alone if you are not from the area.
  • When you are planning to stay the night, do your research. There are many hotels in the area, especially in the market place where you will find one every 50 meters or so. There are hotels run by the Department of Tourism (part of the govt. of Madhya Pradesh). If you don’t fancy government run accommodation, you can always opt for one of the various private resorts or cottage/hotel facilities available in the area.
  • You may be advised to carry cash with you as there are only 2 ATMs there which may run out in the tourist season. Also, many establishments may not have the facility to accept credit cards.

That being said if you are carrying cash, try not to keep it all in one place. Spread it around so nobody around you gets the impression that you have a lot of money on your persona s it could prove to be a temptation for unsavory characters.

A Pachmarhi Holiday: Weather and Other Bits and Bobs of Information

Pachmarhi is also known as Panchmari and is an attractive hill station located in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Being a hill station, it enjoys a cooler climate than the surrounding areas and being situated 1105 meters above sea level is a big contributing factor.

The season and the months you decide to visit this place could make a difference to your trip. Although majority of the visitors tend to flock there to escape the summer heat, the months of October – March is supposed to be best. This is because the weather will be pleasant and enjoyable.

Summer tends to start from the month of May and extends until July end. While the rest of the Central Provinces tends to heat up to unbearable temperatures during the summer months, this place remains cool due to the amount if foliage and favorable climate. The temperature during this time tends to stay below 35 degrees Celsius. You will rarely find a day with a temperature hotter than that. While that may seem hot for many international tourists, this temperature provides a welcome relief to many living in lower altitudes.

India has three distinct seasons – summer, winter and Monsoon. Spring and fall tend to become disguised with the rain. This rule, of course, does not apply to the extreme north where the temperatures can change with every season. The months from July to September see the monsoons hit the area. Pachmarhi enjoys temperate rainfall during this time. The foliage around becomes drenched in rain and the whole place looks like it has been giving a bath. Visitors will see fog dancing in the atmosphere around, as it hugs the hills, giving a contrast of white amongst the freshly washed greens. The climate will be mostly cloudy and when the rains are over, life around will be revitalized. Because of the freshness, these months also prove to be a big draw for many tourists looking to truly see nature in all her glory. However, if you don’t like the rain, you may want to skip these months as many activities can be hampered. For example, you may not be able to go hiking in the hills. With the rains comes water. This place is inundated with waterfalls and streams that flow throughout the region. The falls expand with the influx of water and the waterfalls come alive during this time which is a sight to see.

With the winter season comes frost and lower temperatures. However, the temperature rarely falls below 4 degrees Celsius. As the place is high in elevation, with the cool days comes cooler nights. Most of the hotels don’t have central heating so you may want to pack warmer clothes or request for extra blankets from the hotel. This is still the perfect tourist destination during this time. Winter is between the months of November to February. You can expect to see frost here which will really offer the hill station experience.

With the all year round pleasant weather, Pachmarhi is a tourist hot spot. Construction was prohibited in this area from the 1990s and this means that most of the buildings you will see are restored colonial buildings.

This town will certainly welcome you with an old world charm. If you are into history and architecture, there is a lot to this town and you will definitely leave this place richer in knowledge than when you first visited it. Good for easy walks around the area, there are a large number of temples that can be visited as well.

  • Priyadarshini (Forsyth Point)

The town of Pachmarhi was developed under British rule and therefore has many influences of British art and architecture which is reflected in the churches and buildings around the town. This is a vantage viewing point that marks the spot when the town was first ‘discovered’ by Captain Forsyth in 1857.

  • Jamuna Prapat (Bee Fall)

These falls provide respite from the hot sun and many people visit the bathing pools located above the falls. In fact, if you go at the peak of summer when hordes of tourists flock to Pachmarhi, you’ll find the pools pretty crowded. The falls are spectacular and the stream provides drinking water to the town of Pachmarhi.

  • Pandav Caves

These are five protected caves that are, according to legend, the ancient dwellings of the five Pandava brothers of the Mahabharata Era. The caves are excavated out of the sandstone rock in a low hill. These are protected monuments and the town of Pachmarhi derived its name because of these five caves.

  • Christ Church

The structure and design of the church is interesting. It is adorned with stained glass panes that decorate the walls and the rear of the altar and were imported from Europe. When the sunlight falls through them, it makes a very pretty sight. Built in 1875, this church’s ‘sanctum-sanctorum’ has a hemispherical dome with angels adorning the end of the ribs. The nave does not even have a single pillar for support. The baptismal font is made of brass and is considered to be quite rare. The bells which chime from time to time are as old as the church itself and can be heard from a long distance away.

  • Satpura National Park

As with any natural park, there are landscapes of natural beauty that will put your mind at rest. There are dense evergreen forests of teak, sal and bamboo that spread through the region. Home to the bison, tiger, bear, leopard, four – horned deer, blue bull and a variety of birds, the Satpura National Park is like nature’s paradise.

  • The Cave Shelters

There are many cave shelters decorated with cave paintings that can be dated to be thousands of years old. Explore the cave shelters of Dhuandhar which has a variety of white cave paintings that depict a group of archers with a typical Gond bun and hooped earrings. You can access this cave from the footpath to Apsara Vihar. Next is Bharat Neer (Dorothy Deep) which has well drawn animal paintings. This area was excavated first in the 1930s and many microliths and pottery shards dating back millennia were uncovered. You can also visit Asthachal (Monte Rosa) which has four shelters with linear drawings. There are other shelters on the Northern side of Jambu Dwip valley which has many animal and human depictions and also has a battle scene included.
